Saia freight began in 1924 when Louis Saia, Sr., a produce trader in Houma, Louisiana, realized that distributing produce was more profitable than retailing it. Saia continued to grow over the next 45 years, opening terminals across Louisiana and Texas.

By 1986, Saia had grown to be one of the country’s top regional LTL transporters, with 23 ports in five Southeastern states, about 1000 workers, and over $50 million in sales. Preston Trucking bought the company from the Saia clan in 1987. Preston was acquired by Yellow Corporation in 1993, along with Saia.

Clark Brothers Transport, Inc., with its nine-state, 16-terminal system, entered Saia’s system in 2004, offering support to consumers in key Midwestern cities such as Chicago, Kansas City, and Minneapolis.
